General description
Apolipoprotein is a polymorphic plasma protein that exists as three isoforms: ApoE4, ApoE3, and ApoE2, which differ in the combination of cysteine and arginine residues located at position 122 and 158. The 35 kDa ApoE4 isoform contains arginine at both locations, and is produced in the liver and brain, although it is widely expressed in other tissues, such as the lung, spleen, and ovary. Like other isoforms, ApoE4 is a ligand for low density lipoprotein receptors (LDL) and plays a critical role in the transport and metabolism of lipids. In addition to its role in maintaining cardiovascular function, ApoE4 is also critically involved in neuronal plasticity, synaptogenesis, aging, and neurodegenerative disorders. Mice deficient in ApoE4 show age-dependent abnormalities in synaptic structure and impaired long term potentiation. Additionally, ApoE4 has a well-documented role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease.
Immunogen
